Waverley Borough Council’s building partner Feltham Construction recently funded an Enterprise and Business event for students at Woolmer Hill School. Delivered by SATRO, the Business Games challenged students to run their own business for the day.
Feltham Construction is working with the council to construct 26 new affordable properties in Chiddingfold, making efficient use of brownfield land and equipping the new homes with the latest energy-saving and sustainable technologies. As part of the Social Value requirements of their contract, Feltham Construction worked with SATRO to deliver a fun, informative and engaging day for local students at Woolmer Hill School.
SATRO is an educational charity that aims to inspire and develop the aspirations of young people across Surrey, and a frequent partner of Waverley Housing Services. The participating year 9 students at Woolmer Hill School worked in teams to run a business for the day, learning about the employability skills they could encounter, and overcome!
Business volunteers were there to support the students and give real-life insights by sharing their experiences and pathways to employment. The day gave students an opportunity to develop skills for the workplace, learn about different job roles and the varied functions that make up a business.
Students commented: “I was surprised how many businesses there were in my local area”, and “I was surprised about how the process actually worked. The buying, then creating, then selling and creating contracts.”
Stewart Williams, Assistant Headteacher of Woolmer Hill School, said:
“A great day and one much appreciated by the students! We would, of course, like to personally thank Feltham Construction for their funding of the day, as without it, in these economically challenging times the students would have missed out on such a great experience, working together, developing their skills and interacting with Business guests which they would otherwise not have the chance to do.”
Councillor Janet Crowe, Waverley Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Housing Delivery said:
“We are immensely grateful to Feltham Construction and SATRO for their support and efforts to run this business education event at Woolmer Hill School. Giving students the chance to engage with real-world business skills and insights is an investment in their future, and in the future of our borough. It’s fantastic to see community projects flourish alongside our commitment to building sustainable, high-quality housing to meet the needs of our residents.”
