Taxi and Private Hire driver applications - checking your identity

Process for checking identity of new drivers

We check the criminal records of drivers, if any, when they join us. If you haven’t already registered with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) update service or if your registration has lapsed, we will ask for some identification documents, and complete a form for you, so that we can arrange a DBS check. The DBS will send you a certificate which you must show us as part of the application process.

We require drivers to register for the DBS update service which you are only able to do for a short time after you receive your certificate. When you have registered for the update service email us with your certificate number, your date of birth and your surname so we can check your records regularly.

Arranging your DBS check

The detailed steps required to arrange your DBS check are set out below:

1. Email us a scan or clear photograph of your :

  • Passport, clearly showing all of the page with your photo on
  • Driving licence, back and front
  • A recent utility bill or similar clearly showing the top half of the letter with the utility company's details, your address and the date of the letter (the date should be within the last three months).

2. In the email tell us:

  • Your National Insurance number
  • Whether you have ever been known by any other names
  • When you moved into your current address.

3. Include in your email any other addresses you have held in the last five years with the month and year that you moved in and out of each address eg:

Address 1

From: Month/year

To: Month/year

Address line 1

Address line 2

Town

County

UK postcode

Then list the details for each different address as required.

Once we have received your email with this information we will use it to complete your DBS form. We will ask you to make payment (see our fees), and then arrange for you to come in to sign the form and show us a hard copy of the documents as listed at step 1 above.

We will send the form to the DBS service. They will check your records (this can take up to eight weeks) and send you a certificate with your information on. To proceed with your application you must show us the certificate. You must also register with the update service and pay the annual fee to keep your registration up to date. We suggest you do this immediately when you receive your DBS certificate to reduce the payments you will otherwise need to make.
