EU citizens can vote in UK local government elections

Tom Horwood, Waverley Borough Council Returning Officer, has clarified the voting rights of EU citizens.

Mr Horwood said: “I have been asked whether EU citizens are still entitled to vote in UK local government elections.

“The right of EU citizens to vote in local government elections is set out in UK laws. As these laws have not been changed, the right still exists. The Electoral Commission will notify Returning Officers if the position changes.

“This right applies to local government by-elections and neighbourhood plan referendums.”
