Local Services & Information

How can we help you today?

Access for all

We are committed to ensuring that everyone can use our website and access our services online. This includes residents and visitors with sight, hearing, physical, cognitive, or other disabilities.

We work hard to make our digital services inclusive, and we welcome feedback to help us improve.

Our pledge to you

We are committed to making our website and online services accessible by everyone. We believe that digital information should be open, inclusive, and easy to access; whether you are a resident, visitor, or business.

Accessibility is not just a technical requirement; it is part of our wider corporate strategy on inclusion. We want to ensure that all members of our community regardless of age, ability, background, or circumstance can engage fully with council services and information.

We are working towards meeting the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA standard and continually review our site to improve accessibility.

This means:

  • ensuring content can be read clearly and resized without loss of quality
  • supporting navigation by keyboard, screen readers, and voice recognition software
  • providing alternative text for images and meaningful labels for links and buttons
  • designing pages with consistent structure so information is easy to find.

Accessibility is an ongoing journey. We test our website regularly, listen to feedback, and make improvements so that everyone can benefit from our online services.

Accessibility commitment

We are committed to making our website and online services accessible to everyone. We want all residents and visitors to be able to use our digital services with ease.

Accessibility tools

There are a range of accessibility tools built into your internet browser and our website that can help you adjust how information is displayed and accessed.

Website browsers

Most modern internet browsers, like Chrome have built-in accessibility features that can help you tailor your experience:

  • zoom controls – increase or decrease text size and page magnification (usually found under “View” or with keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl + +/Ctrl + -)
  • translate pages – use your browser’s built‑in translate feature (in Chrome, Edge or Safari) by right‑clicking the page and choosing Translate to turn the webpage into your preferred language
  • custom styling – use tools built into your browser (or a simple add‑on) to change the page’s colours, contrast and font to make it easier to read
  • screen reader compatibility – our site is designed to work with popular screen readers, but browsers also support additional accessibility plug-ins

Text size

We have the option to adjust the text size on our website, this can be found at the top of each page in the header section.

British Sign Language (BSL) support

If you use British Sign Language you can access council services through video relay providers.

Log in to the SignLive service. When you have signed in select 'Waverley Borough Council' from the directory. You'll be connected to a SignLive BSL interpreter. Tell them what you want and they will translate between you and our contact centre.

Translation services

If you need to speak to us in a different language to English, we use telephone interpreting services.

To request this, call us or complete our online enquiry form.

Documents in different formats

We understand that not everyone can access standard online documents. If you need council information in an alternative format, we can provide:

  • large print versions
  • audio recordings
  • plain text or easy‑read formats
  • Braille copies
  • translated documents in other languages

To request a document in a different format, please contact our Website team.

Vulnerable person register

Our vulnerable person list (also known as a priority list) brings together residents who may need extra support, including those who receive assisted bin collections or use a Careline device. It mirrors similar priority registers held by organisations such as utility providers, including British Gas and water companies, to ensure that people with additional needs are identified and protected. Once compiled, the list is securely shared with Surrey County Council, which oversees and manages the information so that appropriate services can be coordinated and delivered effectively.

Struggling to get online?

We know that being online makes it easier to stay connected, access services, and find information quickly. But not everyone feels confident using digital tools, and we’re here to help.

We offer guidance and support for residents who want to build their digital skills whether that’s learning how to use email, accessing council services online, or simply feeling more confident with everyday technology.

Find out more about the support available through our Help getting online page.
