Waverley Borough Council is encouraging residents to consider standing for election as councillor at the local elections on 4 May this year. Local councillors are the elected representatives of their respective ward, whose decisions affect the lives of everyone in the area in countless ways. All seats on the borough council and all town and parish councils within Waverley are up for election this May.

Councils need representatives from all backgrounds and experiences, who reflect the communities they serve.  You don’t need to have any academic qualifications to become a councillor, all you need is passion for the community that you live or work in. The council needs people who are capable, energetic and engaged, and who want to make a difference in their local community. Prospective candidates can seek selection by an established political party, or stand as an independent.

Councillor John Ward, the Mayor of Waverley, said; “The beauty of a democracy is that it is a system in which we can all participate. I understand that at times people may feel powerless, but I’d like to assure everyone that they are anything but!” 

He added; “Serving Waverley as a councillor for the past 15 years has been one of the greatest privileges of my life and whilst the job of being a councillor isn’t easy, it is incredibly rewarding. If you’re passionate about making a change and serving this community, I strongly urge you to consider putting your name forward today. We especially want young people to stand for election so that their interests can be better represented.”
