Plan B COVID-19 restrictions ends in England

Following the Prime Minister’s statement on 19 January 2022 on COVID-19 restrictions, England’s Plan B measures are to end from Thursday (27 January 2022).

Due to the latest data and the numbers of people vaccinated, Boris Johnson confirmed that the government will end Plan B in England. As part of this, the following measures were announced.

  • Since Thursday 20 January 2022, the Government is no longer asking people to work from home. Employers should discuss working arrangements with their employees. Further information on working from home guidance.

  • Since Thursday 20 January 2022, secondary school and college students will no longer need to wear masks in classrooms.  From Thursday 27 January, face coverings will no longer be needed in communal areas of secondary schools or for staff in communal areas of primary schools.

  • From Thursday 27 January, face coverings do not legally have to be worn in public (although the guidance is still to wear coverings in enclosed or crowded spaces and when meeting strangers).

  • From Thursday 27 January, mandatory Covid passports for entering nightclubs and large events will end although organisations can choose to use the NHS Covid pass if they wish.

A full list of guidance on these changes is available on the Government's website.

Everyone is still being asked to play their part in keeping rates down. Ensuring you are vaccinated or going for your booster jab when invited are the most effective things we can all do to stop the spread of the virus. So please Grab The Jab!

Other ways you can help prevent the spread of infection include:

  • Letting the fresh air in when meeting inside or opt to meet outside instead

  • Wearing a face covering – even if other people aren’t, do the right thing and wear one in crowded spaces and on public transport

  • Test regularly – especially if you are heading out to see people who are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill if they caught Covid

  • Staying at home if you are unwell

  • Washing your hands

  • Continuing to use the NHS COVID-19 app

  • Getting your COVID-19 vaccine and flu jab – get protected this winter to boost your immunity.

Let’s help protect ourselves and others as we move forward, play your part and together we can Keep Waverley and Surrey Safe.
