How can we help you today?

Disability Council Tax reduction

You may be able to get a Council Tax disability reduction if your home has been adapted to meet the needs of a disabled person who lives there.

This reduction is based on the property, not the income of the household.

Who can qualify

You may qualify if:

  • a disabled adult or child lives in the property, and
  • the home has been adapted to meet their needs

The disabled person does not have to be the Council Tax payer.

Types of adaptations that may qualify

Your home may qualify if it has at least one of the following:

  • a room mainly used by a disabled person (for example, a therapy room or additional bathroom)
  • an extra kitchen or bathroom needed due to a disability
  • extra space inside the property to allow wheelchair use

The adaptation must be essential or of major importance to the disabled person’s wellbeing.

How the disability reduction works

If your property qualifies, your Council Tax bill will usually be reduced by one Council Tax band.

For example:

  • a Band D property may be charged at Band C
  • a Band A property may receive a reduction equivalent to one‑sixth of the charge

This reduction applies for as long as the adapted use continues.

When the reduction does not apply

You may not qualify if the:

  • adaptations are minor or decorative
  • room or space is used by everyone and is not mainly for the disabled person
  • disabled person has moved out and the adaptation is no longer needed

You must tell us if circumstances change.

Evidence we may need

To assess your application, we may ask for:

  • details of the adaptations
  • confirmation of the disabled person’s needs
  • supporting evidence, such as medical or occupational therapy information

We will only ask for what is necessary.

How to apply

You can apply by telling us about a change in circumstances.

You will need:

  • your Council Tax account number
  • details of the adaptation and the person it supports
