800 Waverley businesses yet to claim Government grants

Waverley Borough Council is appealing to the 800 businesses that are believed to be eligible for either a Business Support Grant or a Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant to get in touch.

Businesses that currently receive Small Business Rate Relief or Rural Rate Relief qualify for a grant of £10,000. Businesses in the retail, hospitality or leisure sectors qualify for a grant of £10,000 if their rateable value is below £15,000 or a grant of £25,000 if their rateable value is between £15,001 and £51,000. These are grants from the Government, not loans and do not need to be paid back.

The council believes there are approximately 2,100 businesses in the borough that qualify for a grant but so far, only around 1,300 businesses have come forward to claim. A number of council staff have been redeployed – many working over the Easter Weekend – to process grant claims and by 16 April payments totalling around £10 million have been made to local businesses.

Waverley has created a page with guidance for businesses on its coronavirus information hub – www.waverley.gov.uk/coronavirus  – which explains all of the Government’s business support schemes, and has links for further information including instructions on how to apply for the grants.
