Waverley approves its Economic Development Strategy

Published Friday, 19 October 2018

Members of Waverley Borough Council adopted the borough’s new Economic Development Strategy at the latest Full Council meeting on Tuesday night.

The strategy, which will run for the period of 2018 – 2032, sets out how the council will support the borough to become a place where all local businesses can prosper, offering both rural and urban communities' access to high quality employment.

In developing the strategy, the council drew on analysis of the local economy and identification of key sectors, while working with the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committees. The council also consulted with a number of business organisations from across the community. They included all four of the borough’s chambers of commerce, Enterprise First, Business First, Waverley Training Services, the University for the Creative Arts, town and parish councils, Enterprise M3 LEP, Visit Surrey, Surrey Hills AONB, Guildford Borough Council, Surrey Chambers of Commerce and Surrey County Council in 2018.

The strategy vision has six themes:

  • to encourage sustainable business and employment growth in both our urban and rural areas
  • to provide high quality business and employment support
  • to support healthy town and village centres
  • to encourage a successful visitor economy that is right for Waverley
  • to expand links with and support the education sector
  • to support the right housing developments in Waverley.

An action plan setting out how the council will take steps to deliver the strategy has also been published and will initially run from 2018-2020. It includes actions such as offering free support to local businesses, investing in commercial premises, maximising the potential benefits of the Brightwells Yard scheme and working with Waverley Training Services to promote workplace apprenticeships to employers and job seekers. The council will work closely with partners and local chambers to achieve the action plan targets.

The action plan will be launched to the business community this evening at the first Waverley BIG Awards. The awards are designed ‘by local businesses, for local businesses’ to recognise, promote and celebrate the achievements of the innovative and entrepreneurial business community, dominated by small and medium sized business enterprises.
