Waverley Borough Council urges residents to help tackle seasonal air pollution

As colder weather sets in, Waverley Borough Council is encouraging residents to consider the impact of wood burning and bonfires on local air quality.

Wood burning is a major source of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which can contribute to respiratory and cardiovascular problems. These particles are invisible to the naked eye but can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, posing serious health risks,  especially for children, older adults, and those with existing health conditions.

Councillor Paul Follows, Leader of Waverley Borough Council, said:

“We all want to stay warm in winter, but it’s important to be mindful of how our choices affect the air we all breathe. By choosing cleaner heating options and avoiding unnecessary bonfires, residents can help protect their neighbours and support our commitment to a healthier, more sustainable Waverley.”

The council recommends:

  • Using dry, seasoned wood or approved smokeless fuels
  • No burning of household or commercial waste
  • Exploring cleaner heating alternatives such as electric or gas systems
  • Composting garden waste instead of burning it

This initiative forms part of Waverley’s wider air quality strategy, which supports the council’s Corporate Strategy priority of creating a more sustainable borough. You can find more information on this by visiting Air Quality Action Plan & Clean Air Strategy | Waverley Borough Council.

The council has a fortnightly domestic garden waste collection available to residents Garden Waste Collection Service | Waverley Borough Council or if you would like to find out more about home composting, you can visit Home Composting Resources | Waverley Borough Council.
