West Surrey Council elections - Thursday 7 May 2026

Elections to the new West Surrey Council (Unitary Authority)

On Thursday 7 May 2026, elections for the new West Surrey Shadow Unitary Authority will be held. Registered local government electors will be able to vote for two candidates in each electoral ward.

Those elected will go on to form the new Unitary Authority (West Surrey Council). The new council will replace Surrey County Council and the Boroughs of Waverley, Guildford, Woking, Surrey Heath, Runnymede and Spelthorne. These county and borough councils will cease to exist on 1 April 2027.

Based upon new county electoral divisions confirmed in 2024, there are nine wards in the Waverley Borough area. They are:

  • Cranleigh & Ewhurst
  • Farnham Central
  • Farnham North
  • Farnham South
  • Godalming North
  • Godalming South, Milford and Witley
  • Haslemere
  • Waverley Eastern Villages
  • Waverley Western Villages

  1. Nomination papers may be obtained from the offices of the Deputy Returning Officer Council Offices, the Burys, Godalming, Surrey, GU7 1HR, during the times stated below.
  2. Nomination papers must be delivered to the Deputy Returning Officer, Council Offices, The Burys, Godalming, Surrey, GU7 1HR on any working day after the date of this notice but no later than 4pm on Thursday, 9 April 2026.
  3. If any election is contested the poll will take place on Thursday, 7th May 2026.
  4. Applications to register to vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 11.59pm on Monday 20 April 2026. Applications can be made online: Register to Vote
  5. Applications, amendments or cancellations of postal votes and amendments or cancellations of proxy votes must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at Council Offices, The Burys, Godalming, Surrey, GU7 1HR by 5pm on Tuesday, 21st April 2026. Applications can be made online:  Postal Vote
  6. Applications for a Voter Authority Certificate or an Anonymous Elector's Document valid for this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at Council Offices, The Burys, Godalming, Surrey, GU7 1HR by 5pm on Tuesday, 28th April 2026.   8. Applications to vote by emergency proxy at this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at Council Offices, The Burys, Godalming, Surrey, GU7 1HR by 5pm on Thursday, 7 May 2026.

Eligible persons who wish to be candidates at these elections must deliver duly completed nomination papers to the Deputy Returning Officer on any working day from Tuesday 24 March 2026, and by no later than the deadline of 4pm on Thursday 9 April 2026.

Prospective candidates are asked to please make an appointment to attend the WBC Council Office in-person to submit completed nomination papers. To arrange this please contact Electoral Services directly by phone on 01483 523116 or via email: electoralservices@waverley.gov.uk

Ahead of your in-person appointment to submit your hard copy papers formally, to ensure all goes smoothly, we encourage you to seek an informal pre-check of your papers several days in advance of formal submission. You can do this by email to Electoral Services via the email address shown above. We will check them and reply to you as soon as possible.
