Waverley Borough Council stands firm against Farnborough Airport Expansion

“Waverley residents must not be left to pay the price for private jet pollution,” says Council Leader Paul Follows.

Waverley Borough Council has taken a decisive stance against the proposed expansion of Farnborough Airport, voicing deep concerns about its environmental, social, and health implications for local communities.

At a council meeting on 25 March 2025, Members voted overwhelmingly to oppose the expansion plans, which would significantly increase flight numbers and, in turn, lead to higher levels of noise and air pollution - particularly affecting residents in Northwest Waverley.

In line with its declared climate emergency and commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030, the council has called for immediate action. Council Leader Cllr Paul Follows has written to key national and local figures including Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander, MPs Jeremy Hunt and Ed Baker, and the Chief Executive of Farnborough Airport, to make the council’s position clear.

“Private jet travel benefits only a privileged few, but the environmental consequences will be shared by all - especially communities like ours,” said Cllr Follows. “We’re calling on our MPs and national leaders to reject this short-sighted proposal, that will fail to deliver economic growth for the public at large and prioritise the health and wellbeing of local residents and the planet.”

The council’s resolution outlines several clear actions. It has declared firm opposition to the airport expansion, citing its likely impact on noise pollution, air quality, and carbon emissions. The council also expressed strong support for the local campaign against the proposal and urged Rushmoor Borough Council to reject the planning application

In addition, the council is calling on the government to introduce stricter regulations on private aviation to help meet the UK’s national climate targets.

Cllr Steve Williams, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, emphasised the wider consequences of the proposal:

“This plan directly contradicts our environmental values and commitments. We stand with residents who are rightly concerned about increased disruption and pollution. Waverley is united in saying no to more private jet traffic over our homes.

"Waverley Borough Council remains committed to protecting its environment, supporting its residents, and advocating for sustainable national policy in the face of climate change.”
