Great Big Green Week 2026 is coming to Waverley!

Waverley Borough Council is proud to champion Great Big Green Week 2026 - the UK’s biggest annual celebration of community action on climate change and nature protection. This year’s theme is ‘Together for Good’, which aims to show that together we can make our neighbourhoods better places to live and protect the natural world we love.

🗓 6-14 June

Get ready for a week packed with inspiring events, eco-friendly ideas, and community spirit across the borough. Whether you're a resident, business owner, or visitor to the area, there’s something for everyone to get involved in and make a real difference.

What’s happening in the borough?

From Repair Cafés to film screenings and art exhibitions, explore events across the borough on the Great Big Green Week website: Waverley Great Big Green Week.

Guildford Borough Council’s annual Guildford Green Day event takes place on Sunday 14 June. This is a free event for all the family and includes activities and information to help you take practical steps to tackle climate change. See the latest electric vehicles, get your bike checked, learn more about recycling or visit the artisan food and drink stalls.

Get involved

If you’d like to make a difference by getting involved in practical conservation tasks, join our countryside rangers and other volunteers helping to improve local wildlife habitats. For more information, visit Volunteering in the Countryside.

Cllr Adam Duce, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, said:

“As a council working towards carbon neutrality by 2030, sustainability is one of our key priorities. We’re continuing to reduce carbon emissions from our leisure centres, assist local businesses to achieve GreenMark accreditation through our Go Green for Business support scheme, encourage sustainable travel by providing grants to schools for scooter and cycle parking and help households to reduce food waste by providing free access to a meal planning service.

But real change happens when we all get involved — and that’s what Great Big Green Week is all about. I encourage residents to take a look at what is going on around the borough and take part in one of the many fun and informative activities on offer.”

Waverley’s current climate and nature initiatives include:

  • Reducing carbon emissions from our leisure centres: Since 2015, we have halved emissions from our four leisure centres. At Farnham Leisure Centre, work is underway to replace gas boilers that are at the end of their usable life with modern, energy efficient Air Source Heat Pumps. The new system will reduce carbon emissions and lower running costs.
  • Supporting local businesses: Fifteen businesses signed up to our Go Green for Business Support Scheme, working toward GreenMark environmental accreditation. To find out how they got on, or to register your interest in the next round of funding, visit Go Green for Business
  • Encouraging sustainable travel: We have offered all state schools in the borough up to £2,500 of grant funding to improve or increase their bike and scooter storage, with the aim of encouraging more children to cycle or scoot to school. Interested schools should email environmentalhealth@waverley.gov.uk for further details.
  • Improving active travel routes: We have provided grants supporting Farnham Town Council’s provision of lampposts on Borelli Walk and designs for a Cranleigh Parish Council bridge project. A link into Farnham Park is currently being constructed to finalise the upgrade of a 500m section of the Scholars Greenway in Farnham.
  • Reducing food waste: Waverley and Guildford residents are invited to join FiveDinners online meal planning service for free. Users can choose up to five dinner recipes each week and are provided with a shopping list. The service aims to reduce food waste and encourage healthy eating. To join, please visit: My Community Free Membership – Five Dinners Meal Planner
  • Improving recycling: As part of Simpler Recycling, residents can now add cartons (such as milk, juice and soup cartons), squeezy plastic and metal tubes (such as toothpaste tubes and tomato puree tubes), and non-black plastic plant pots to your recycling bin for collection. For more information visit What can I put in my household bins? or if you’re not sure if it can be recycled, use the Recycling Search tool.
  • In May we launched our new Animal Welfare Charter, which demonstrate our commitment to protecting and promoting the welfare of all animals, including domesticated and wild animals.
