How can we help you today?

Bulky waste collections

Bulky waste collections are for large household items that won’t fit in your normal rubbish or recycling bins. The service is provided by Furniture Helpline, not us. You can use it to dispose of items such as sofas, mattresses, fridges, freezers and other large appliances.

What you can put out for collection

Bulky waste includes large household items.

Common examples include:

  • furniture - sofas, armchairs, tables, wardrobes, mattresses
  • large appliances - washing machines, fridges, freezers, tumble dryers
  • outdoor items - barbecues (empty), garden furniture
  • electrical items - TVs, microwaves

Small electrical appliances can be collected by us for free.

Items must be safe to lift, dry, and placed outside where the crew can reach them.

Items that cannot be collected

Some items cannot be collected for safety, size or legal reasons.

These include:

  • hazardous waste - chemicals, paint, asbestos
  • very large items - sheds, large glass panels, pianos
  • vehicle parts - tyres, engines, car batteries
  • black bag waste - loose or bagged household rubbish

If your item is not eligible, you can use a Community Recycling Centre, a licensed waste carrier, or a reuse charity.

How to book a collection

The booking process depends on how many items you have:

  • one to nine items - book online using the Furniture Helpline form
  • 10 or more items - email Furniture Helpline to arrange a quote

After booking, you’ll receive confirmation and instructions. Items must be outside by 7am on the day of collection.

Reuse and repair options

Giving your item a second life is often the easiest and most environmentally friendly option. Before booking a bulky waste collection, you may want to try one of these local reuse and repair routes:

  • Freecycle and reuse groups: Local online communities where you can give away items in good condition. Many people will collect from your home, which saves you time and keeps usable items out of landfill.
  • Repair cafés: Volunteer‑run sessions where you can bring broken household items to be fixed for free. Common repairs include small electricals, furniture, textiles and bikes. Repair cafés help reduce waste and may save you the cost of replacing an item.
  • Charity shops and reuse organisations: Some charities accept furniture and working appliances, and many offer free collection for larger items.

These options are ideal if your item is still usable or can be repaired. They also help support local community groups and reduce the amount of waste sent for disposal.
