British values policy

Aims and scope

This policy is underpinned by relatable laws and regulations in regard to British Values which provide the framework and includes but is not limited to, the Equality Act 2010 , Worker Protection Act 2023, the latest guidance on Keeping Children Safe in Education, Working together to Safeguard Children, and the Prevent Duty.

Established by the UK government in 2014, and with support from the Department for Education (DfE), British Values were introduced into the curriculum as they are deemed to support learners develop the knowledge and attitudes necessary to thrive in British society and prepare them for a modern life in Britain.

Waverley Training Services (WTS) provides high quality training and Apprenticeships in a variety of subjects and through its curriculum actively promotes British Values and aids learners to develop into responsible, respectful, and active citizens who are able to play their part and know how to become involved in public life.

Developing and deepening learners understanding of the fundamentals of British Values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance for those of different faiths and beliefs.

Purpose

The purpose of this document is to provide support, clarification and guidance setting out the ways in which WTS actively promotes British Values when delivering Apprenticeships and training courses to a wide range of people. We encourage our employees, learners, and other stakeholders to develop their understanding of British Values, through its curriculum and other opportunities.

WTS, understand we have a duty to prepare our learners for a life in modern Britain and to keep them safe. This is reflected and implemented effectively through regular teaching sessions aimed at promoting Learner and employee welfare.

The Department for Education (DfE) define British Values in the categories below.

Democracy: 'We have a say in what happens through'

  • Apprentices and employers providing feedback via the apprenticeship service.
  • Actively inviting participation in surveys to proactively make improvements to our service.

Rule of Law: 'Understanding why rules are important'

  • We implement fair rules adhering to legislation and regulations and consider employer and training provider policies.
  • Understand the difference between right and wrong and that there are consequences for not adhering to the rule of law.
  • We further understand that rules are developed to support and guide.

Individual Liberty: 'Freedom for all'

  • We encourage and empower apprentices and employees to make their own choices when it comes to decision making.
  • Understand the rewards or consequences for their actions, promoting self-awareness.

Mutual Respect: 'Treat others as you would want to be treated'

  • We work together to help one another.
  • We respect each other's physical space.
  • We respect each other's contribution to discussions.
  • We take on group roles to support the learning of our peers, and
  • We respect that we are all different and therefore should be treated as individuals.

Tolerance for those of different Faiths and Beliefs: 'We like learning about different faiths and cultures'

  • We listen to other people's point of view.
  • We are actively interested in understanding other's traditions, customs and religious practices and how they enrich and strengthen communities and society.
  • We discuss how diversity makes us what we are today, and we embrace the richness that a multi-cultural society creates.

Our commitment

WTS are committed to prepare our employees and learners for life in modern Britain and to keep them safe, to support WTS to achieve this we have nominated Champions who lead on each of the following categories:

  • Safeguarding
  • Prevent
  • Health and Safety
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Healthy Living and wellbeing

Each champion will source and present up to date information on each of these categories, including current affairs and legislation changes at monthly full team meetings.

British Values is built into the curriculum through the sharing and raising awareness of these values and are used as topical discussion starting points in teaching sessions and tasks which may involve updated legislation such as:

  • Progress Reviews: understanding how British Values are part of everyday life.
  • Set tasks: complete set tasks which deepen knowledge of demonstrating how British Values link with apprentice job roles and responsibilities.
  • Monthly Newsletter: we share information via a monthly newsletter with content that supports and promotes broader learning outside of Apprenticeships.

Monitoring and Review

This policy will be monitored and reviewed in line with sector guidance updates from the DfE, and Ofsted.
