Annual Canvass

Each year, the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) has a legal requirement to conduct an annual canvass to ensure the electoral register is accurate and complete. Households will be allocated to routes and will be contacted in different ways depending on the result of our local and national data matching.

The electoral register was sent securely to the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to be matched against their records in July. During the data matching process, elector's names and addresses were matched against details held by the DWP.

If all the registered people at your property could be matched with the DWP, your property became a Route 1 property.

If there were any people at your property that couldn't be matched, your property became a Route 2 property.

Some forms don’t require a response unless there are changes to be made. If you don’t respond to the initial form, and you’re required to do so, we will have to send further forms or make personal contact increasing the cost of the annual canvass.

If we contact you via email you must respond. If you don’t, we will have to send more costly paper forms or make personal contact via phone or door knocking.

If we still don't receive a response, electoral canvassers will contact you. This could be by telephone or by visiting your property with a form to encourage you to respond.

When making personal visits we will follow the latest UK Health Security Agency guidance when we visit properties.
