Waverley Mayor Hosts Civic Service at St John’s Church, Farncombe

The Mayor of Waverley Borough Council, Councillor Penny Rivers, held her Civic Service on Sunday 6 July at St John’s Church in Farncombe, bringing together councillors, community representatives, and residents for a moment of reflection, faith, and civic pride.

The service, which began with a formal civic procession, was led by the Mayor’s Chaplain, the Reverend James Rattue, Rector of St John’s. Guests were welcomed by the church and took part in hymns, readings, and prayers, celebrating the start of the Mayor’s term and reaffirming a shared commitment to service.

In a symbolic moment during the service, Cllr Rivers made a public promise to serve the borough with compassion and fairness, pledging to reach out to all residents, "young and old, able and less able, those of faith and those with none, male, female, LGBTQ+ alike.”

Musical highlights included performances by the Godalming Junior School Choir, singing “Higher and Higher”, and heartfelt renditions of Amazing Grace and Beauty for Brokenness. The congregation also enjoyed a reading of Psalm 23 by the Mayor’s Consort, Cllr Paul Rivers, and the Mayor herself gave a personal reading of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

The Civic Service also shone a light on the Mayor’s chosen charities for the year:

The Meath Epilepsy Charity, which provides specialist care and support for people living with complex epilepsy and related disabilities.

Skillway, a local vocational training initiative for young people, helping build skills, confidence, and a positive future.

Following the service, attendees joined the Mayor for refreshments in the Church Room, with thanks extended to all who contributed, from the Godalming Town Band and school choir to volunteers, local bakers, and church staff.

Councillor Penny Rivers, Mayor of Waverley said:

“I’m honoured to serve as Mayor of Waverley. This Civic Service was not only a moment of tradition but a meaningful way to commit ourselves to serving one another. I’m deeply grateful to the community and to everyone who made this day so special.”
