The Mayor of Waverley, Councillor David Munro, and Waverley Borough Council’s Leader and Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Paul Follows, came together to show their support for the Armed Forces community as the Armed Forces Day Flag was raised at the flagpole at the council’s offices in Godalming, marking the start of Armed Forces Week.
Armed Forces Day is a national occasion to honour the men and women of the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force - including those currently serving, veterans, reservists, cadets, and service families.
Councillors were joined by council staff in a simple but meaningful ceremony to recognise and honour those who serve, or have served, in the Armed Forces, as well as their families. The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by service personnel and to reaffirm the council’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community.
Armed Forces Day itself will take place on Saturday 28 June, with events being held across the UK. From parades and community gatherings to family-friendly activities and commemorative services, these events provide an opportunity for people of all ages to show their support and learn more about the work of the Armed Forces. You can find out more about national and local events, and ways to get involved, by visiting www.armedforcesday.org.uk.
Councillor David Munro, The Mayor of Waverley, said:
“Armed Forces Week is an important moment for us to recognise and honour the dedication, courage and sacrifice of those who serve our country. Raising the Armed Forces Flag is a visible and powerful way for us to show our gratitude and to stand in support of service personnel, veterans and their families.”
Councillor Paul Follows added:
“As a council, we are committed to recognising the valuable contribution of the Armed Forces community and ensuring they are supported and respected across the borough. This ceremony is a powerful reminder of the important role they play in our society, and we are proud to honour their service not just during Armed Forces Week, but throughout the year.”
