Save money and reduce waste with local ‘Libraries of Things’

Residents across Waverley are being encouraged to discover their local Library of Things, where they can borrow everything from DIY tools and garden equipment to party supplies and outdoor games, helping to save money and reduce waste.

With household budgets under pressure and many people looking for ways to cut costs, Libraries of Things offer an affordable alternative to buying items that may only be used occasionally. Instead of purchasing equipment that could end up gathering dust in a cupboard or shed, residents can borrow what they need for a small fee or donation. These volunteer-run community projects  make it easy for local people to access useful items when they need them; popular items include carpet cleaners, hedge trimmers, power tools, outdoor games and party equipment.

As well as helping households save money, borrowing instead of buying reduces clutter, makes better use of resources and cuts the environmental impact associated with the manufacture, transport and disposal of products.

There are currently Libraries of Things operating in Cranleigh, Godalming and Haslemere, with each scheme already making a positive difference in its local community.

  • Cranleigh's Library of Things launched in March 2026 and has already attracted 100 members.
  • Godalming's Library of Things has recorded 379 loans in the past 12 months.
  • Haslemere's Library of Things estimates it has helped residents save around £10,000 over the last two years by borrowing rather than buying items.

Many of the items available to borrow have been donated by local residents, giving perfectly usable equipment a second life and supporting a culture of sharing and reuse.

Councillor Adam Duce, Waverley Borough Council's Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, said:

"Libraries of Things are a fantastic example of communities coming together to help residents save money while reducing waste. Many of us own items that are only used once or twice a year, so it makes sense to borrow rather than buy when possible. These schemes provide practical support for households, reduce unnecessary consumption and help us all play a part in creating a more sustainable future. I would encourage anyone planning a DIY project, family celebration or simply looking to save money to see what's available through their local Library of Things."

The schemes are run by volunteers and welcome support from local people. Anyone interested in volunteering or donating suitable items is encouraged to contact their local Library of Things directly.
