It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of The Right Reverend Andrew Watson, the Bishop of Guildford.
On behalf of Guildford Borough Council and Waverley Borough Council and our entire communities, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those in the Diocese of Guildford who are mourning his loss.
Bishop Andrew’s contribution to Guildford, Waverley and the entire area was significant and lasting. His compassion, steady leadership, and unwavering commitment to serving others enriched the lives of many across Guildford, Waverley and beyond.
The legacy of his commitment to a society which celebrates the diversity and religious pluralism of Guildford and the wider county extended well beyond signing The Guildford Declaration of Freedom of Religion and Belief in January 2025.
He will be remembered not only for his ministry, but for the warmth, kindness, and integrity with which he carried it out.
At this difficult time, we hold his loved ones and all members of the Diocese in our thoughts and offer our full support as they come to terms with their grief. May they find comfort in knowing how deeply he was respected and how much he will be missed.

Councillor Howard Smith, Mayor of Guildford
