Can you have a lodger or subtenant if you have a spare room?

As a council tenant, you can usually take in a lodger or sublet a room if you have the space in your home.

• If you want to take in a lodger, you need to inform your Housing Officer.
• If you want to sublet part of your home, you need to have our written consent. Subletting your home without our consent is a criminal offence.  Find out more about council housing fraud.

• If you receive Universal Credit or Housing Benefit you need to tell them.  It may affect the amount of benefit you are entitled to.
