Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second

It was with the greatest sadness that Waverley Borough Council learnt of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022. 

On this page you can find details of the local and national commemorations for Britain's longest-serving monarch, along with details of the proclamation of His Majesty King Charles III.

Letter of condolence

A letter of condolence on behalf of the borough from the Mayor of Waverley, Councillor John Ward, was sent to The Royal Family.  

Books of condolence

Books of condolence were made available at the Waverley Borough Council Offices in Godalming, Godalming Museum and the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, along with St John's Church in Farncombe. 

Flags at half mast

The Union Flag at the Waverley Borough Council Offices in Godalming and green flags around the Borough were lowered to half-mast during the period of National Mourning. 

Laying flowers

Councillor John Ward, the Mayor of Waverley and Councillor Paul Follows, Leader of Waverley Borough Council each laid a wreath at the Pepperpot on the High Street in Godalming: Local leaders pay respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Local events

A number of local events took place to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during the period of National Mourning, including a candelit vigil in Gostrey Meadow in Farnham and a Moment of Reflection at Cranleigh War Memorial.

The Accession Proclamation naming the new Monarch, His Majesty King Charles III, was read out in all countries of the United Kingdom. The Principal Proclamation took place on Saturday 10 September.

In Surrey, the Regional Proclamation was read at Guildford Cathedral by His Honour Christopher Critchlow the High Sheriff of Surrey accompanied by Michael More-Molyneux the Lord-Lieutenant on Sunday 11 September.
