Waverley marks anniversary of Ukraine invasion

The Mayor, along with others including Deputy Mayor, Cllr David Munro, Rev Chris Lion of the Godalming Minster, and Leader Councillor Paul Follows, joined with members of our Ukrainian community who sang their National Anthem, staff and councillors at The Burys this morning (Tuesday 24 February) to mark the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

A moment of silence was held followed by the raising of the Ukrainian flag in a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and with all those in Waverley who have been affected by the conflict.

The council has continued to support Ukrainian guests living in the borough through a range of local initiatives, partnerships and community‑based assistance.

The Mayor of Waverley, Councillor Penny Rivers, said:

“Four years on, the impact of the war in Ukraine is still felt deeply by many within our community. This moment of reflection allows us to stand together in solidarity with Ukrainians, both those still in the country and those who now call Waverley their temporary home.

“I am proud of the compassion, generosity and support shown by residents, host families and local organisations across the borough.”
