The Mayor of Waverley, Councillor David Munro, the Leader of Waverley Borough Council, Councillor Paul Follows, and members of the Waverley Borough Council Executive came together to show their support for the LGBT community as the Pride Flag was raised outside the council offices in Godalming, to mark Pride Month.
Cllr Munro highlighted the importance of inclusion, equality and respect, paying tribute to the progress made in advancing LGBT rights while recognising that there is still more to be done. He was joined by councillors and council staff as the flag was raised as a demonstration of the council’s commitment to diversity and to creating an inclusive and welcoming borough for everyone.
Pride Month is celebrated each June and provides an opportunity to recognise the social and cultural and contributions of LGBT people, honour the history of the movement, and promote equality and inclusion in communities across the UK and beyond.
Celebrating Pride Month plays a vital role in promoting understanding, visibility and acceptance of the LGBT community. By recognising the contributions, identities and experiences of LGBT people, Pride helps to challenge discrimination and foster a culture of inclusion where everyone feels seen and valued. Increasing visibility not only supports those within the community, but also helps to educate others, break down barriers, and create safer, more cohesive communities.
Councillor David Munro, The Mayor of Waverley, said:
“Raising the Pride Flag is an important way for us to stand in solidarity with our LGBT residents, colleagues and communities. It reflects our commitment to creating a borough where everyone feels safe, valued and able to be their true selves. Pride Month is both a celebration of progress and a reminder of the work that continues toward the goal of achieving genuine equality for all.”
Residents and organisations are encouraged to mark Pride Month by attending local events, flying the Pride, Progress or other rainbow flag, tagging #PrideMonth, and sharing messages of support that promote inclusivity and respect for all.
