Waverley Borough Council takes ownership of 12 new affordable homes in Godalming

Waverley Borough Council has officially taken ownership of 12 new affordable flats at Bargate Lodge, Catteshall Lane, Godalming.

Castle Green Developments, a Godalming-based housebuilder, secured planning permission and delivered the 100% affordable housing scheme. The council has purchased the homes, with the acquisition partially funded through a Section 106 contribution. The purchase represents a significant investment by Waverley Borough Council in providing much-needed affordable housing for the local community.

The official handover was attended by The Mayor of Waverley, Councillor Penny Rivers, Councillor Janet Crowe, Co-Portfolio Holder for Housing (Delivery), and local ward councillors, including Councillor Paul Follows, Leader of the Council, and Councillor Victoria Kiehl. They were joined by Rob Trendle from Castle Green Developments to formally mark the completion of the scheme.

At the heart of the project is a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The development incorporates a range of green technologies, including solar panels for renewable energy, electric vehicle charging points and energy-efficient LED lighting throughout. Each home is fitted with an Air Source Heat Pump to provide highly efficient, low-carbon heating, while double glazing helps ensure the flats remain warm and energy-efficient during the winter months.

Councillor Janet Crowe, Co-Portfolio Holder for Housing (Delivery), said:

“These new homes represent a significant step forward in our commitment to providing high-quality, genuinely affordable housing for local people. By using Section 106 funding in this way, we are ensuring that investment secured from development is reinvested directly back into our communities. Just as importantly, these flats are future-proofed, with low-carbon technologies that will help residents keep their energy bills down while reducing our environmental impact.”

Rob Trendle from Castle Green Developments added:

“We are proud to be working in partnership with Waverley Borough Council on this important project. As a Godalming-based company, it means a great deal to us to deliver homes that will directly benefit our local community. Bargate Lodge has been designed with sustainability at its heart, and we’re delighted that these high-quality, energy-efficient homes will now provide long-term affordable housing for local residents.”

The council’s purchase of the Bargate Lodge flats forms part of its wider programme to increase the supply of affordable homes across the borough, helping to meet local housing need while supporting sustainable development.
