Waverley Borough Council plans for thriving and green local economy

Waverley Borough Council has adopted a new Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan to provide a clear vision of how Waverley can achieve a green, creative and sustainable economy.

Drawing inspiration from Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economics, the strategy recognises the importance of providing environmental protection and societal benefits alongside economic growth.

The strategy focuses on establishing Waverley as the go-to place for green businesses and elevating the strong creative sector in the borough. Place strategies will help to regenerate the main towns and villages, ensuring they remain fit for the future, whilst small clusters of sensitive and sustainable business activity will help rural communities to thrive.

Ensuring that all residents have equal access to training and skills development opportunities is a key priority and the programme aims to make Waverley more digitally connected.

The new Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan runs from 2024 until 2032. It is informed through quantitative and qualitative data collated by economic development specialists Economic Growth Management Limited and Avison Young.

The council has conducted extensive engagement with local stakeholders across the borough, including Surrey County Council, town and parish councils, the Chambers of Commerce, the Federation of Small Businesses, and key representatives from the local business community. One-to-one discussions and group workshops helped to produce a deep understanding of the current economic climate and identify specific development opportunities.

Abi Lewis, Waverley Borough Council Executive Head for Regeneration and Planning Policy said:

“With good connectivity, a highly skilled local workforce, and stunning natural resources, Waverley is one of the best places in the country to locate a business.

“By accommodating energy efficient residential and commercial sites that are supported by high-speed digital connections, and are low carbon, we aim to attract more sustainable businesses and entrepreneurs to our area.

“Our strategy will ensure that Waverley is well-positioned to harness the opportunities of new, emerging technologies, support and retain our existing business base, and that our borough continues to be a great place to work, live and invest.”
