Last week, Waverley Borough Council elected Councillor David Munro as the new Mayor of Waverley.
Councillor Munro, who represents the Western Commons ward and lives in Frensham, was elected as a Waverley councillor in a by-election in 2022. He has lived in the ward for over 30 years and has had a long career as a local councillor in Farnham, culminating in a spell as Chairman of Surrey County Council 2013-2015. He was Surrey’s Police and Crime Commissioner from 2016-2021, and Deputy Mayor from 2025-2026.
As the Mayor, Councillor Munro will attend a wide variety of engagements, act as an ambassador for the council, chair council meetings, and raise funds for the charities he will nominate.
The Mayor said: “I am proud and honoured to be elected as Waverley's Mayor and hope to be worthy of the trust that fellow-Councillors have put in me.
“This is Waverley Council's last year before we all move to a unitary system, so the theme of my Mayoral year will be thankfulness: to Waverley Councillors over the years who have dedicated their lives to helping residents, to our hard-working staff, past and present, and above all to the army of volunteer Waverley residents who have tirelessly supported their fellow citizens and made the borough such a great place to live and work in.”
Councillor Penny Rivers, who represents the Godalming Farncombe & Catteshall ward and was previously Mayor, will serve as Deputy Mayor for the 2026-2027 civic year.
Leader of the Council, Paul Follows, welcomed Councillor Munro into the Mayoral chair and paid tribute to Councillor Penny Rivers who he said, “has been a valued and committed representative for the borough over the past year.”
