Cranleigh’s skate scene is set for an upgrade, and Waverley Borough Council is inviting residents - from skateboarders and BMX riders to scooter users and rollerbladers - to share their views on what a new skatepark could look like.  

This week, a newly formed skate and bike park user group made up of local residents and riders, met for the first time to give early feedback on the plans.  

Portfolio Holder for Planning and Development at Waverley Borough Council, Councillor Liz Townsend, said: “A big thank you to the user group for getting involved and sharing their ideas on the initial design. We know how important this project is to local riders, and now we want to hear from the wider community too. We want this to be a space that people feel excited about and proud of for years to come.” 

Online survey and drop-in event 

An online survey opens today and will run until 13 September, giving residents the opportunity to review the initial design concept and provide feedback. In addition, there will be a drop-in event on Monday 7 September at Cranleigh Arts Centre (1 High St, Cranleigh), where people can speak to the project team and give feedback in person. 

Once all feedback has been reviewed, the council will finalise the design and submit a planning application. Residents will also be able to comment on the project through the formal planning process. The new park is expected to open in autumn 2027, subject to planning permission being granted. 

A skater-run business 

The Council has appointed skater-run business Maverick Industries to develop the plans. Specialists in the design and construction of spray concrete skateparks, Maverick has designed and built more than 200 skateparks across the UK. 

Director at Maverick Industries, Russ Holbert, said: “We’re passionate about creating skateparks that become valued local assets. Every project starts with listening to the people who will use it, and we’re excited to work with Waverley Borough Council and Cranleigh’s riders to create a welcoming, high-quality park that supports creativity, progression and enjoyment for all wheeled sports.” 

The new skate and bike park will meet Sport England standards and offer a free, welcoming place for people of all ages to get active, practise their skills, and enjoy time outdoors. 

It will be located on the green space north of Snoxhall Fields and east of Knowle Lane, just a short walk from the old skatepark and Cranleigh Leisure Centre. The move to a new location is part of wider regeneration plans for the area and will allow the current skatepark site to be used in the construction of the new Cranleigh Leisure Centre.
