Haslemere residents encouraged to ‘shop local’ instead of buying online

Waverley Borough Council has embarked on a campaign to encourage more Haslemere people to visit their local high street and buy something that they would normally order online.

“When did you last visit your local high street?” is the question at the heart of the initiative, which aims to inspire residents to rethink their shopping habits and make a conscious effort to support local, independent businesses.

While phrases such as ‘shop local’ and ‘use it or lose it’ are widely used, Waverley is urging people to go one step further by actively choosing to purchase items locally that might otherwise be added to an online basket. The campaign highlights the vital role residents play in sustaining their local high street and preserving its unique identity.

Cllr Liz Townsend said: "Haslemere is rightly celebrated for its vibrant independent shops, many of which rely on the continued support of local residents. These businesses are at the heart of the town, contributing to a strong local economy, creating jobs and giving Haslemere its distinctive character and charm."

To highlight some of Haslemere’s hidden gems, Waverley interviewed a number of local retailers and discovered how these high street heroes contribute so much more than the items they sell.

Cllr Liz Townsend added: "The interviews with local retailers revealed a common thread running through them all – a strong commitment to their customers, their community and to sustainable choices. Together, they demonstrate the unique value that independent shops bring, from carefully curated products and personal service to welcoming spaces that help people connect. By choosing to shop locally, residents are helping to sustain the businesses that make Haslemere such a special place."

Through this campaign, the first in a series taking place across the main settlements in the borough, Waverley Borough Council hopes to remind residents that small changes in shopping habits can make a significant difference that will benefit many. The interviews with Marley Flowers, Ben’s Ice Cream, Past & Present, Bells Butchers, The Haslemere Bookshop and Sass & Spirit can be read at  'When did you last visit your local high street?' campaign.
