Senior members of Waverley Borough Council have made it clear that the authority is ahead of the game on collecting waste following a funding announcement by the Communities Secretary.

Eric Pickles confirmed £250 million would be made available for councils to improve recycling and waste collection.

"In April, every household in Waverley will have food waste collected each week," Cllr Bryn Morgan, councillor responsible for environment at Waverley Borough Council said. "This follows carefully considered food waste pilots that currently see 10,000 Waverley residents having left-overs collected from the kerbside each week."

"We already run a very efficient and effective alternative weekly collection service - residual waste one week, recycling the next - and the improvements we have planned are exactly what residents have been saying they want.

"We are developing an even better service for the coming years which will save council taxpayers' money. However, I very much welcome Mr Pickles' announcement and we will be submitting a bid for a slice of the £250 million."
