Other improvements include the introduction of a single recycling wheelie bin which replaces the current trio of baskets and enables you to place an even wider range of recyclables into one container.

This more convenient and customer-friendly household waste collection service follows a decision taken by councillors at a special council meeting earlier this evening (Tuesday 30 August). Councillors decided to continue the current contract with Veolia, which still has seven years to run, and to incorporate various improvements in the delivery of the service at lower cost.

The change is due to come into effect during Spring 2012 and will benefit residents and the environment. The improved arrangement means a wider range of recyclables can be collected in a single wheelie bin including cardboard, foil, Tetra Paks and a wider range of plastics, as well as the materials that are currently collected such as paper, glass, cans and plastic bottles. Residents will still have use of a second wheelie bin for disposal of all non-recyclable waste.

Around 10,000 homes in Waverley are already seeing the benefits of weekly food waste collections and the planned improvements will enable this highly popular service to be rolled out to every home in Waverley. The scheme accepts all food waste, including raw and cooked meat, fish, bones and leftovers. Householders are provided with a caddy in which to collect their food waste which is emptied on a weekly basis putting an end to worries about smells and pests.

Councillor Bryn Morgan who is responsible for environmental services at Waverley Borough Council said:
"This decision represents a huge step forward in the recycling service we deliver, and phase one will see even more recyclable materials being collected from people's homes with fewer collection containers.

"We can now progress in mobilising a more customer-friendly collection method that will deliver our objectives to increase recycling rates in the borough from around 40% to 60% whilst also being more affordable.

"Food leftovers can make up to a third of the weight of the bin. A kerbside food waste collection system will cut the amount of waste we tip into landfill and reduce the amount of methane production. All the improvements Waverley is making to its waste and recycling collection service strike a balance between offering convenience to customers, protecting our natural environment and reducing costs."
