Farnham Job Club gets a boost as Guildford Advice To Employment (GATE) take the reins.
Farnham Job Club has been running at the Sandy Hill Community Bungalow since 2013. The club is a partnership project between GATE, Waverley Borough Council and the Sandy Hill Community Bungalow, with funding from Community Foundation for Surrey. Each Tuesday, from 10am to 1pm, the friendly club offers jobseekers an alternative network of contacts, a place to share experiences and get support on the journey to employment.
GATE has been running the Guildford Job Club for more than three years and has a long history of getting people back into work.
Alan Wyle, Advisor at GATE, said: “Being unemployed can be hard to deal with alone, but being part of a job club means that jobseekers can face the challenge with people in similar situations and keep motivated. Successful jobseeker, Ivan found this out first hand when he came to GATE.
“After five years working as an English Language Teacher in Beijing, Ivan came back to the UK. Being away from the UK for so long, Ivan found that the job market, and the way companies recruited, had changed.
“He found his way to the job club, seeking a bit of help and advice. At the weekly meetings Ivan received advice on how to search for work, improve his CV and interview skills, while gaining an understanding of the wider skills employers look for. Importantly, Ivan learned how to stay motivated and positive while searching for a job.
“Through hard work, some support and a bit of encouragement, Ivan was successful in finding a job with a leading business in Guildford.”
Councillor Andrew Bolton, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, said: “The job club at Sandy Hill has been a staple in the community since 2013. Keeping it open, so it can continue to help local people get back into work, is a priority for the council.”
