About Council Tax Support

If you pay Council Tax on your home and you are on a low income, you may be able to get help paying your bill.

If you are entitled to help, we will pay the Council Tax Support directly onto your Council Tax account for the whole year. This means you will get a reduced Council Tax bill.

Who can get Council Tax Support

Anyone who has to pay Council Tax can apply for Council Tax Support. We will carry out a means test to see if you are eligible to get it.

If you have more than £16,000 in savings and investments, you will not qualify for Council Tax Support (unless you receive the guarantee element of Pension Credit).

How to apply for Council Tax Support

What happens next

Once we have all the information to assess your claim, we aim to process it within 10 working days.

The date we use for the start of your claim is the Monday after the date we receive your application form. In certain circumstances, we may be able to pay from an earlier date.

Report a change in circumstances

Following the COVID-19 outbreak, many existing households have had a reduction in their earnings from employment or self-employment.

Please remember to update your Council Tax Support claim to reflect your new circumstances.

The easiest and most convenient way to make a claim or report a change in circumstances is to email housingbenefits@waverley.gov.uk specifying:

  • Your claim number
  • Name
  • Address
  • When the change occurred
  • Who the change affects (e.g. claimant or partner)
  • What the change is
