The Mayor of Waverley

The Mayor is the civic head of the council, whose role is non-political. The Mayor carries out ceremonial duties and chairs meetings, but is not able to make decisions about council business.

Within the borough the Mayor is second in precedence only to royalty and the Queen's representative, the Lord Lieutenant.

Current Mayor

The Mayor of Waverley for 2019-20, Councillor Mary Foryszewski.

The Mayor of Waverley from May 2019 to May 2020 is Councillor Mary Foryszewski.

Cllr Foryszewski has lived in the borough since 1989 and she has been a Waverley councillor since 2003. She owns a small dog training business and enjoys gardening and musical theatre in her spare time.

Mayor's chosen charity

The Mayor is supporting Mane Chance Sanctuary. The charity's mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, abandoned and old horses, integrating them with the local community. Mane Chance Sanctuary regularly host visits from terminally ill children, those with special needs and other underprivileged youngsters, fulfilling its aim of helping horses help people.

Throughout her Mayoral year, the Mayor is also working with local initiatives and charities to raise awareness of male mental ill-health and male suicide.

Deputy Mayor

The Deputy Mayor is Councillor Penny Marriott.

How to address the Mayor

The correct form of address is as follows:

  • The Worshipful the Mayor of Waverley, Cllr .....'
  • Salutation: 'Dear Mr Mayor' or in the case of a female Mayor, 'Dear Madam Mayor'
  • A female Mayor should not be referred to as 'The Mayoress'. This title is given to a male Mayor's escort/consort and is not necessarily the Mayor's wife.
