A grant of £171,000 has been secured by Waverley Borough Council to help reduce the problems of flooding in a number of high risk households in Godalming.

The grant will be used to install flood protection measures that will help prevent internal flooding in the future to those properties most severely affected in the area.

Cllr Bryn Morgan (Con), Waverley's councillor responsible for Environment says: "Waverley is committed to improving the lives of its residents in any way it can. We have a responsibility to raise awareness of the risk of flooding and to promote self protection to property owners. This grant will facilitate the installation of flood protection measures such as air brick covers, free-standing barriers, door boards, flood skirts, and water-resistant external doors to those homes that would really benefit most.

"The project will also highlight how other property owners can protect themselves against flooding with the installation of simple flood-reduction measures."

The successful application was made in partnership with the Lammas Residents' Association. Robert Zannetti, Chair of the Association says: "We are delighted that together with Waverley we have managed to secure funding that directly impacts on those who live in homes that are liable to flooding. We hope the scheme will also inspire other residents to take steps themselves to protect their own properties.

It can be extremely stressful seeing the level of water steadily rising and threatening to wreak destruction in your home. But householders in flood-risk areas can help themselves by putting in basic flood prevention to help stem any impending flow of floodwater."

Householders who have been selected to take part in the scheme have already been sent a letter by Waverley to encourage them to take part and to explain what the grant will pay for.
