Ice and snow continues to severely disrupt services and travel across Surrey. Find out the latest information and advice on Waverley services.

Refuse and recycling collections suspended

All collections of refuse and recycling have been suspended until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We are currently unable to predict when we will be able to resume collections. In the meantime we are working closely with our contractors to put temporary measures in place to enable you to dispose of your refuse and recycling.

Temporary waste collection points

Temporary waste collection points are open today Friday 15 January from 9am until 12noon. You will then be able to dispose of any surplus refuse and recycling that you are keen to get rid of.

Locations for refuse disposal:

  • Godalming - Crown Court
  • Farnham - Sainsbury's in Water Lane
  • Haselmere - Tesco's at Weyhill
  • Cranleigh - Village Way
If we are unable to resume normal collections next week, we will continue to provide this service.

You can also take your waste to a number of recycling sites across Surrey. Please take the weather conditions into account before venturing out as we will be collecting your refuse as soon as it is safe to do so.

Resuming normal collections

We need to ensure that the pavements, roads and indeed the area in between is safe enough for our crews to start collecting again. The welfare of our collectors and of the public must be our priority. Therefore, we cannot resume services until pavements are free of snow and of ice.

In the meantime, if it is safe to leave your waste and recycling at the edge of your property - please do so - so you will be ready when collections resume. Please can you help the crews by freeing any snow or ice that may have compacted around the bins or containers. Please be assured that any additional waste and recycling will then be taken.

When collections resume they will be on your normal collection day - see the 2010 calendar of waste and recycling collection dates. If you are unsure whether to leave out recycling or refuse check your bin collection day online. For any other enquiries relating to our services, please call and leave a message on 01483 523524. We thank you for your continued patience.

    Housing Repairs

At the moment we can only respond to the most serious emergencies, however during office hours we can offer telephone advice.

Where there is loss of heat because a boiler has broken down we will try to send out our central heating contractor to households where tenants are of retirement age, people who are disabled or families with children aged under 5 years.

We know that there have been some electricity power cuts in parts of the Borough, affecting some homes. However we have no control over this. Please contact your electricity provider to find out more information.

    Abandoned vehicles

We have not been issuing penalty charge notices where cars have been abandoned, but as conditions improve we need to ensure the free flow of traffic. Once patrols commence they will concentrate on cars parked in dangerous positions on main roads where parking restrictions apply. If you have had to abandon your vehicle in a dangerous position please remove it as soon as possible. If you have any difficulties removing your vehicle please contact the parking team on 01483 523408 or email parking@waverley.gov.uk.

    School closures

Many schools and colleges in the area are closed. To get the latest information on school closure have a look at Surrey County Council's website, Eagle Radio's website or BBC Surrey.

Are you or a neighbour in need?

If you have an elderly or vulnerable neighbour who is perhaps not able to get out because of the snow, please knock on their door to check they are OK and that they have food and are keeping warm. Get advice on keeping warm in the freezing conditions.

If you are on your own and are feeling cold, frightened or hungry and do not know what to do, please pick up the phone call Surrey County Council's Social Care Team on 0300 200 1005.

You can also read about how Waverley staff have been helping vulnerable people in the freezing weather.

    Travelling in the snow

Please avoid travelling anywhere unless your journey is urgent. Should you have to travel get advice on driving in snow from the AA. Extreme icy conditions and the snow are making driving conditions treacherous so please stay at home if possible. For more information and general advice visit the Met Office website.

Beware - a very deep pothole has appeared in Chalk Road, Godalming just before the railway bridge, heading towards Bridge Road which is likely to cause damage to road users' vehicles, especially motorbikes/cyclists.

    Road gritting

Surrey County Council is responsible for gritting the roads across Surrey. See the latest information on Surrey CC's current road gritting situation or call SCC Highways on 0300 200 1003.

    Clearing pavements safely

If you wish to clear ice and snow from outside your home or shop, there is no reason why you should be liable to anyone who subsequently falls on the surface you have cleared, unless you have created an obstruction or anything else that could  cause an injury. For example if you use hot water to clear the ice and snow, this could create more ice. Or if a mound of snow is left on the path or road, this could cause an obstruction.

Simply clearing a pavement is fine as long as you act sensibly and consider the effect your actions might have on other people. As long as snow is cleared responsibly and without causing further risk for passers-by, there is unlikely to be any liability.
