How to register to vote
Are you on the register?
If you want to vote in the UK Elections you have to be on the Electoral Register, the list of everyone registered to vote. You are not automatically registered because you pay council tax.
Am I on the Electoral Register?
We hold the Electoral Register for Waverley. Just contact us on electoral.services@waverley.gov.uk or telephone 01483 523116. Please note that phone calls may be recorded for training or monitoring purposes.
Can I register to vote?
You can register to vote if you are:
- 16 years old or over and
- a British citizen
- an Irish, EU or qualifying Commonwealth citizen. Qualifying Commonwealth citizens are those who have leave to enter or remain in the UK, or do not require such leave
When can I vote?
You can vote as soon as you become 18 as long as you are on the electoral register.
What happens if I can't vote in person?
If you won't be available to vote on Election Day you can vote using a proxy vote (someone votes on your behalf) or a postal vote (you send in your vote by post to arrive before 10pm on Election Day.
Can I apply for a postal or proxy vote?
The deadlines to apply for both postal and proxy votes for the election on 6 May have now passed. There is still provision for an emergency proxy but only if you are taken ill.
