The first of Waverley’s 2019/20 budget proposals are to be considered by the Value for Money and Customer Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday 22 January.

The committee will make suggestions to the proposed budget, before it is sent to the Executive Committee and Full Council to review and agree.

The proposals currently include protecting voluntary sector funding, investment in pavilions and playgrounds and an increase of 2.99% in Waverley’s portion of Council Tax.

Councillor Ged Hall, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Communications at Waverley Borough Council, said: “Despite further significant cuts to our funding, we have still managed to produce a fair and balanced budget, which maintains grants to our voluntary sector partners and does not include any increase in parking charges.

“We have proposed raising Council Tax by 2.99%, which is the equivalent of approximately 10p a week for an average Band D property. We feel this is a reasonable and necessary amount to maintain our high quality community facilities and, above all, protects services for our residents.

“However, the council is forecasting a significant budget shortfall which is expected over the next three years, following 2019/20. To prepare for this, over the next year we will focus on finding further efficiencies, make sensible investments in our properties and other assets - including car parks and sports and leisure facilities - and engage with the county council, parish councils and our other partners to come up with innovative ways to address the funding gap.

“We look forward to receiving feedback from the Overview and Scrutiny Committee.”
