A report recommending Waverley Borough Council concludes the legal process to grant leases to Godalming and Haslemere Town Councils to run the public toilets is to be presented to the Executive.

If the recommendation is approved next Tuesday (10 October), council officers will conclude the legal agreements so that Haslemere Town Council can run the public toilets in High Street car park and Godalming Town Council can run the toilets at Crown Court car park in Godalming and North Street in Farncombe.

Councillor Jim Edwards, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “Earlier this year we were faced with some difficult decisions in order to balance our budget.

“However, I am pleased that, through negotiations with the town councils, we have managed to work together to find a solution so the public conveniences can reopen for the local communities.

“If the recommendation is approved, the town councils will run the toilets for the next 20 years.”

Notes to editors

A decision to close the public toilets was made as part of the budget setting process.

The toilets in both Godalming and Farncombe were closed to the public on Monday 19 June.
