Speaking after the Mayor-making ceremony Cllr Gordon-Smith said: "I am both honoured and privileged to have been elected as the Mayor of Waverley. This is a very exciting year to be Mayor. I'm very much looking forward to the Jubilee events taking place across the borough and the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Godalming on 20 July promises to be a sensational event. This year of sport will be crowned by the opening of the new Godalming Leisure Centre in the early autumn."
He adds: "During my year I will be holding events to fundraise for my four chosen charities which are: the Prostate Project - a charity whose mission is to give men a better chance at beating prostate cancer, GRACE which supports women with gynaecological cancers, the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment Benevolent Fund and DropBy an online community which aims to put an end to isolation amongst the over 60s. As well as supporting my own charities I am also greatly looking forward to visiting some of the very worthwhile organisations in this borough.
Cllr Gordon-Smith moved to Godalming in 1982 to teach statistics at Charterhouse School. Tony spent his working life split between being a university lecturer and a management consultant building interactive marketing models for major international companies.
Now retired, Tony continues to live in Godalming with his wife Cathy who is also a town councillor. They have two sons and seven grandchildren. Tony is a very active Godalming councillor and is involved with organisations such as the parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, the Rotary Club, Godalming Trust and the Oglethorpe Society.
Cllr Patricia Ellis was elected as the Deputy Mayor.
He was first elected as a borough councillor for the Godalming Charterhouse ward in 2007 and has served as the Deputy Mayor since May 2011. Tony has also been a town councillor since 2003.
