Planning Advice for Student Projects
How Can We Help You?
The information on these pages is aimed at both students researching projects and at those setting them.
We are always willing to assist students by providing information and discussing projects wherever possible. However, giving assistance is time consuming and it is desirable that time should be saved, not only for staff at Waverley, but also for students.
Please download the guidelines which set out what we can provide and also what we can't. There are also a series of fact sheets which are provided to cover the more popular subjects for planning related projects. If you think we could do with others, please let us know.
Please Give Us Time to Respond
Experience has shown that many of you leave your projects until the last minute! This isn't a good idea for many reasons, and it may result in you not receiving information from us in time to complete your work.
We want to be able to give you what information we can, in a form to enable you to use it, and at the level that you need. We provide information for students of all ages from GCSE to degree level, and as planning is often a complex process, you need to be able to understand what we give you.
If we can't help you, then we will try to direct you to a more helpful source of information.
This information all takes time to put together, and the amount of other work we have to do means that we are very rarely able to provide you with material immediately. So, please note that we will need at the very least, 10 working days to be able to respond to you.
Please Contact Us Yourselves!
You are doing the project, not your parents! They are there to support you of course, but often they don't really know what you need. We may also be able to give you some ideas to help make your project more interesting, and maybe this will even earn you some extra marks!
Either telephone, write or email, giving as much information as you can about what you need.
Advance Warning from Teachers
We realise that pupils are often advised to choose their own subjects to research, but if you are going to set one planning -related subject for the whole class, it would be very helpful if you could contact us prior to setting the project. We don't want to provide all the answers to the students as of course, we aren't here to do their projects for them, but if appropriate, we could produce a planning factsheet, which could include some questions for them to consider or research, or at least have information ready about a specific site when inquiries from students begin.
Maps
The majority of students ask for Ordnance Survey Maps. In the past we could not supply these under the terms of our licence with the Ordnance Survey. Now the rules have changed slightly, in that we can supply state schools only with maps, the proviso being that the requests for maps must come via the school teacher. Ideally then, you could keep the original in your library and take copies when required. You should be licensed to do this via the education authority, but please check. We must emphasise that we can only supply students with maps through the schools: ordinarily we are only permitted to supply A4 sized Ordnance Survey maps to make planning applications and this is at a cost of £17.50 for 10.
Any requests directly from students will attract this fee. As Waverley is aware that maps form an important part of geography/environmental projects, it will be our policy to supply one A3 extract per project site, free of charge to the school. We have a digital mapping system which can cope with a variety of scales, and so you will need to specify the area which you require.
