What to do during or after a flood

During or after a flood

Are you in imminent risk of flooding?

Waverley will endeavour to assist with supply of sandbags to block doorways and openings, if you have concerns that your house interior is at imminent risk of flooding, or where Environment Agency flood warnings have been issued.

Call our Engineers on 01483 5233401 or out of hours the Council's emergency number - 02392 242161.

The Environment Agency have produced a document called During a Flood which can be downloaded and offers advice on what to do when flooding has started to affect you.

Emergencies - household checklist

The chances of you being caught up in a major emergency or disaster are low. Nevertheless it may happen and every household can take simple preparatory steps.  The information in this document shows you how you can be better prepared to protect yourself and others for differing types of emergency.  Download the Emergencies and you checklist.

Surrey Alert - Surrey emergency information including river details.

Floods and driving

Remember that if you have to be out and about during severe weather, flooded roads present unseen dangers - manhole covers lift and are hazards that will severely damage any vehicle, flows can lift a vehicle suddenly.

Even if you have a vehicle that copes with some water - such as a 4-wheel drive - never drive through large amounts of standing or flowing water. Many properties that receive flood damage are affected by the bow waves of inconsiderate drivers, rather than rising levels.

Clearing up after a flood

Download the leaflet After the flood, which gives practical steps you can take after a flood to try and return your household to normality. Cleaning up, drying out, restoring the mains and making repairs.
