How to register to vote

Are you on the register?

If you want to vote in elections you have to be on the Electoral Register, the list of everyone registered to vote. You are not automatically registered because you pay council tax.

Can I register to vote?

You can register to vote if you are:

  • 16 years old (find out more) or over and
  • a British citizen
  • an Irish, EU or qualifying Commonwealth citizen. Qualifying Commonwealth citizens are those who have leave to enter or remain in the UK, or do not require such leave

When can I vote?

You can vote as soon as you become 18 as long as you are on the electoral register. Find out more.

What happens if I can't vote in person?

If you won't be available to vote on Election Day you can vote using a proxy vote (someone votes on your behalf) or a postal vote (you send in your vote by post to arrive before 10pm on Election Day.
