The Electoral Register

Electoral Register

What is it?

The Electoral Register is compiled and kept in two versions - full and and edited. You must be on the register in order to vote in an election.

If you want to add your name to the register email or call electoral services and we will send you a form to complete and return to us.

The full register

This lists everyone who is entitled to vote. This version is used for elections, credit reference and fraud purposes. It is a secure copy and is not available for sale and can only be viewed by certain people and organisations for specific purposes as outlined above and governed by law. It is a criminal offence for this register to be passed on or used for any other purpose. You can check whether you are on it by contacting us by email or telephone.

The edited (public) register

This leaves out the names and addresses of people who have requested that they are excluded from the public version of the register. This edited register is a public document and can be purchased by anyone who can then use it for any purpose.

Details of this register and how to be excluded appear on the back of the annual canvass and rolling registration forms. If you do not want your details to appear on the edited register tick the relevant column on the annual registration form you receive every year or on the rolling registration form you receive if you re-register after changing address.

How is the register compiled?

Every Autumn all households receive an annual voter registration form and they have a legal obligation to respond to.  Please see the Annual voter registration form for full details.

A new revised Register is then published on 1 December each year. To check you are on the Register contact us at:

Why do you need to be on the register?

The electoral register ensures you have the right to vote. It is also used by credit reference agencies (ie banks, building societies etc) when you apply for credit. It is essential that your details are up to date. If your name is not on the electoral register for your current address you may be refused a mortgage, loan etc.You can apply to be on the Electoral Register as soon as you turn 17 years of age.

Have you recently moved?

If you move house or change your name you can get your details changed during the year by using the rolling registration form. These 'rolling registration' applications can be made until August, when the register is then closed for the annual canvass of all households. The rolling registration timetable dates are set by Law. To see when your application would be determined and your name added, or details changed, please look at the timetable below.
