Loan Boxes
Loan Boxes cost £3 for a two week loan and need to be collected from and returned to the Museum. To book a loan box contact the Museum.
The Toy Box A collection of original and replica toys. This box includes a wooden bilbo catcher, bagatelle, counting frame, quoits board, metal vehicles, jigsaws, replica Roman knucklebones and a replica Tudor stump doll. Many of the toys can be played with under appropriate supervision and detailed teaching notes are provided. (Please note, this is a large box, collecting by car is recommended) The Ancient Egyptians Original pottery, jewellery, a coin and an ancient hand axe illustrate the early settlement of the Nile valley, Egypt's often violent relationship with neighbouring Kush and everyday life and ritual in Ptolomaic Egypt. The box is supported by clear and informative teaching notes. Life in Roman Times A range of original Roman items including pottery and jewellery, as well as bones and oyster shells from a Roman kitchen, give an insight into everyday life in Roman times. They are supported with extensive teaching notes and books and pamphlets for additional background reading. Roman Buildings Build your own Roman roof and heating system - model tiles can be used to construct a typical Roman tiled roof and a hypocaust and are supported by original examples of Roman building materials and detailed teaching notes. Roman Mosaics Use the illustrations, notes and examples of original mosaic pieces to find out about Roman mosaics and then use the trays and modern mosaic pieces to create your own designs. Roman Arithmetic A sequence of display cards explains the pre-Roman number system, the methods the Romans used for adding and subtracting and the replacement of Roman by Arabic numerals. There are puzzles and calculations to work out along the way. The display cards are supported by examples of original Roman and later counting tokens. Roman Quiz Box A useful revision tool - 10 'puzzle' artefacts to get students thinking about what they have learnt about the Romans, particularly if they have used the Roman Life or Roman Buildings loan boxes. Identifications and further information are provided in the teaching notes. Life in Tudor Times Genuine artefacts illustrate Tudor domestic and courtly life, learning and religion. They include a rare Tudor child's exercise book which makes a direct connection with modern day students. Supported by CDs of Tudor music, photographs and detailed teaching notes. Tudor Times, the Dawn of Printing The Tudors had their own information revolution with the invention of the printing press. This box contains a leaf from a manuscript book of around 1400, leaves from books printed in the late 15th century and a 17th century book. Extensive teaching notes describe how manuscripts and early printed books were produced. A Victorian Collection Original artefacts illustrate everyday life in Victorian times. They include a book of souvenir photographs of the local celebrations for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, a medal celebrating the opening of Hascombe School, children's books, a beaded purse and the Witley parish magazine for 1887. Rowland Hill and the Universal Penny Post Discover the explosion of information transfer, brought about in 1840 by the Penny Post. Original artefacts including letters from before and after 1840 for comparison, a letter weight from Eashing and a souvenir from the Penny Post Jubilee, are supported by detailed teaching notes. Pastimes of the Victorian Era and the Early Twentieth Century Students are encouraged to compare and contrast childhood in Victorian times and the early 20th century, with the present day, using a toy theatre, a chemistry set, boys and girls magazines, stamp and cigarette cards, scrapbooks and autograph books and a sewing bird. Supported by time-saving teaching notes. Photographs of Old Godalming 19 photographs and prints showing the old cobbled High Street, its shops and the Pepperpot, Church Street, other nearby roads and two local mills. Laminated for easy handling, these provide a glimpse of Godalming over the past couple of centuries. Photographs of Godalming and District in 1921 An original souvenir of Godalming and District, containing 37 views with historical and descriptive notes which give a vivid picture of the area between the two World Wars. Laminated copies of the photographs in the book are included. World War 2 Original artefacts and a recorded CD of personal memories vividly recall what it was like to grow up during a bleak but compelling six years. Items include a gas mask and ARP helmet, as well as illustrations of local experiences. In Granny's Day Simple household objects - a darning mushroom, knicker elastic, a bakelite thimble, grate polish and a wooden pencil box take students back to a different world only 50 years ago.
