RMS Titanic and Jack Phillips
Remembering the Titanic - Godalming's link with the Titanic for 2012
Godalming in Surrey commemorated the life and bravery of local man, Jack Phillips, who was the Chief Telegraphic Officer on the Titanic when it sank in 1912, with a series of events culminating in a memorial service and re-opening of the newly restored Phillips Memorial Cloister; this was followed by an Edwardian Picnic in the Phillips Memorial Park. This all took place on the actual 100th anniversary of the sinking - Sunday, 15 April 2012.
New book - The Phillips Memorial Park - an arts and crafts tribute to a hero of the titanic
A book, The Phillips Memorial Park, an Arts and Crafts tribute to a hero of the Titanic, has been published by the Arts and Crafts Movement in Surrey. Chapters include details about the original committee (all women suffragists), Gertrude Jekyll's involvement, Hugh Thackeray Turner, and the history of the Park and Cloister to date.
Copies available from Godalming Museum, price £8.95.
Restoration of the Phillips Memorial Park and Cloister
A five year programme of work to restore and enhance the Phillips Memorial Park and Cloister started in August 2011. Find out more about the Phillips Memorial Park and cloister restoration work.
The restoration of the cloister was successfully completed in time for a memorial service held on Sunday 15 April 2012, the date of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Following this, the restored Cloister was formally re-opened by Councillor Ricard Gates, the Mayor of Waverley, and Paul Hudson, Chair of the South East Committee of the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Godalming's other Titanic connection
Godalming has another connection with the Titanic, through Lord Pirrie, the Chairman of Harland and Wolff shipbuilders which built the Titanic and its sister ships, and who lived at Witley Park, just outside Godalming. One of the Witley Park Estate gates was on show at the Godalming Museum, showing Lord Pirrie's crest with its link to the White Star ships ( by kind permission of Witley office of the National Trust).
Events elsewhere
The 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic is being commemorated at a number of locations around the world. For further details of comparatively local (British, French and Irish) venues, please refer to the Titanic Cities website.
