How to claim Housing Benefit

New claims for Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance

If you are making a new claim for any of these benefits, Jobcentre Plus will take details for Housing Benefit at the same time, over the phone.

Jobcentre Plus will send us your details so that we can work out your Housing Benefit.  We may still need to ask you for some extra details.

New claims for Pension Credit

You may be able to claim pension credit if you have reached pensionable age.  Check if you are entitled to Pension Credit.

If you are making a new claim for Pension Credit, the Pension Service will ask you if you want to claim Housing Benefit.

The Pension Service will send us your details so that we can work out your Housing Benefit.  We may still need to ask you for some extra details.

'On the spot' processing of applications

If you are not claiming any of the benefits listed above, and want to apply for Housing Benefit (and / or Council Tax Support), please call us on 01483 523596 to make an appointment.

If you make an appointment to make a claim at one of our offices, and provide all the required supporting documents we will process your claim on the spot.

If we need more information we will tell you and make another appointment for you to bring this in. 

Supporting documents you will need to apply for benefits

  • National Insurance numbers for you (and your partner, if relevant)
  • Proof of identity (two documents per person)
  • capital, savings and investments
  • earnings
  • other income
  • benefits, allowances or pensions
  • private rent and tenancy

Please note that you must provide original documents, not copies. Please note that we cannot pay your benefit until we have seen all the proof we have asked for.

Emergency payments

Surrey County Council run the Local Assistance Scheme (LAS) for Surrey residents in need of emergency payments. Please note that all LAS applications must be made in person at a Surrey Citizens Advice Bureau office, for more information on the scheme please visit Surreycc.gov.uk.
