The role of Mayor is a non-political post and the Mayor is the civic head of the Council. Within the borough, the Mayor is second in precedence only to royalty and the Queen's representative, the Lord Lieutenant. On Waverley premises the Mayor takes precedence over all except the Queen. This high standing is mainly one of honour and dignity, rather than actual legal powers. The Mayor acts as an 'ambassador' for the council and as Chairman at its meetings.
