About Blackheath Common

Blackheath Common consists of 100 ha (250 acres) of lowland heathland, leased and managed by Waverley Borough Council.  It lies around Blackheath village, with the majority of the site lying to the east of the village.  Blackheath is east of the B2128 and south of the A248.   

Getting there - parking

There are two car parks:

  • Blackheath Lane (TQ 0364461)
  • Littleford Lane (TQ 035454)

Getting there - by train

Chilworth station is about one mile to the north of Blackheath Common.  Chilworth lies on the  Guildford to Redhill/Gatwick Airport line with trains stopping roughly every 2 hours in either direction.  For train times and other information, please look at First Great Western train company.

Getting there - by bus

  • Chilworth: Arriva bus routes 21, 22 and 32 run from Guildford to Dorking (alight at Chilworth Station) every 30 mins.  NB: No service Sundays.
  • Blackheath: Carlone/Surrey County Council bus route 523 from Guildford to Milford Hospital runs once per day (NB: Monday to Fridays only).
  • Wonersh: Arriva bus routes 53 and 63 run from Guildford to Cranleigh every 20 minutes on weekdays, hourly service on Sundays.

Eating and drinking

There are a few pubs in the area:

  • The Villagers Inn in Blackheath village (near main car park)- shut (as at January 2012)
  • The Percy Arms, in Chilworth (near Railway Station)- closed (as at January 2012)  following fire - check their web site for re-opening
  • The Grantley Arms in Wonersh (near centre) 

What is the habitat type?

Dry lowland heathland, including acid grassland, lying on Bargate and Folkstone beds of the Lower Greensand.
