Business in the Community
Social Enterprise - voluntary and community sector businesses
With the idea of a 'Big Society', social enterprises are being encouraged to provide services that are delivered locally, tailored to local need, and provide additional social value.
What is social enterprise?
A Social Enterprise is a business that generates a profit for community benefit rather than for private gain. They rely on the will, energy and skills of residents and are usually inspired by a specific local need. Customers should be able to expect to get the same level of service and value from a social enterprise as they would from any other business.
The Council and other bodies can create the conditions to encourage them to start up and grow by publicising the work they do and supporting them through signposting volunteers to the advice they need.
